A motion sponsored by the member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon (Barr) Otobong E. Bob, has called for the immediate takeover of Ndukpoise Health Centre by the Akwa Ibom State Government from the Catholic Mission.
The motion which was brought today, November 7, 2019, pursuant to Order Three, Rule 1 of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Standing Orders (Sixth Edition) note that thirty two years after the Mission took over the running of the health facility, it had not fulfilled the community's dreams but has instead abandoned the health centre to rot with no more activities like treatment of sick people, immunization services, child delivery, pre-natal and post-natal services among other healthcare services.
Hon (Barr) Bob recalled in the motion that the strategic location of the health centre serviced citizens across five communities of three wards in Nsit Ubium State Constituency and even extended its services to citizens of neighbouring Ikot Essien in Nsit Atai and Ndikpo Atang in Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituencies.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges observed that whereas the State Government has sunk in substantial resources to provide standard health infrastructure and qualified manpower at the various health facilities across the state, he noted that Ndukpoise community has missed all the Government support to health facilities throughout the State while their Centre has been left to waste away by the untoward management strategies and negligent attitude of the Catholic Mission.
He held that since it is the conviction of all the major stakeholders of Ndukpoise community that their health facility be immediately taken over by the Akwa Ibom State Government from the Catholic Mission for effective management and utilization, as evidenced in a request duly signed by them, he prayed that the relevant House Committee be directed on oversight to interface with the community and parties involved to ensure the demands of the people of Ndukpoise towards salvaging their health facility is met and that the State Government should direct the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board to grant the community's request by immediately taking over the health institution to avoid further decay and the consequences associated with the non availability of an active health facility in an area.
.
The motion which was supported by Hon (Dr.) Mrs. Charity Ido, member representing Ukanafun State Constituency has been referred to the House Committee on Health to meet with the parties concerned and the Ministry of Health and report back in one month.
