ANIEKAN BASSEY: FULFILLING THE SENATORIAL MANDATE OF THE YOUTH

By TAB

In the era where Youths are advocating for political inclusion both at the national and local level, and in a situation where elective officers are bound to deliver on their mandate, it then behooves on the delegates and in extension the populace to choose men and women of proven integrity to mount the saddles of leadership as 2023 beckons.

Looking at the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District Seat (Uyo Senatorial District) in view of the above, the aspiration of Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, a credible son of Uruan Local Government Area and currently the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, comes to mind.

To align totally with political pundits and in support of the concept of zoning and rotation of political office, justice, fairness and equity have micro-zoned the Senatorial District seat to Uyo Federal Constituency, and here again, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey resurfaces as the right man for the job.

For the benefit of those who only know Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey on the surface, he is a tested and trusted silent achiever with legislative excellence that is enveloped with stability and devoid of rancour.

Legislatively, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey has carried out his responsibilities of lawmaking, oversight and representation creditably. In fact, the overall records of the Assembly under his Speakership remain unparalleled.

On representation, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey has facilitated the construction of Mbak-Issiet Road; reclamation and gully erosion control project on the Ituk Mbang–Ibiaku Issiet Road and many other intervention projects. All these were possible because of his collaboration and cooperation with the Governor Udom Emmanuel-led Executive. He has also trained more than 1000 youths in JAMB CBT and computer studies, sponsored JAMB Classes and purchased forms for more than 100 indigent students.

He facilitated vocational training and starter packs for more than 300 Uruan persons in phone repairs, hair dressing, fashion design, beads and hat making, computer studies and paint manufacturing. He has sponsored several editions of free medical exercise where more than 5000 Uruan people benefitted from the exercise.

Rt. Hon. Anekan Bassey has attracted projects such as Renovation of Town Hall at Ekim Enen, Renovation of Town Hall at Use Uruan, Installation of 300KVA Electricity Transformer at Ikot Inyang Esuk, Installation of Electricity Transformer at Afaha Ikot Issiet, Renovation of 4-Classroom Blocks at Ikpa Uruan, Facilitated the upgrading of Nung Ikono Ufok Village Market, Construction of 6-Classroom Blocks at Akan Obio Uruan, provided relief materials and cash to two warring communities (Anakpa and Nna Enin) to help resettle them and many more.

As a way of giving back to society, he floated a pet project, the RHAB-YESS Foundation (Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey Youth Entrepreneurship Support Scheme Foundation) to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Akwa Ibom State, create job and wealth, reduce unemployment, get the youths and rural women engaged, fight insecurity and chart a bright future.

As we go to the PDP Primaries and subsequent elections, delegates of Uyo Senatorial District are challenged to search their consciences and decide on the progress and development of the district through Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, a young man with great antecedents and pedigree.

As a two term Lawmaker and Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey is capable of bringing every situation under control and at the right time, therefore, being a Senator will not be an experimental field where he will get lost in the crowd due to absence of legislative know how.

Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, if elected Senator, will attract the much needed democratic benefits and dividends to his Senatorial District because he has never been selfish, and he believes in the ideology of live and let’s live. He is, and will remain, a trailblazer as far as legislative competency is concern.
