In honouring and celebrating the remarkable journey of a dedicated legislator in the 10th National Assembly, Senator Aniekan Bassey, who is constantly making lasting impacts through his legislative work, it is noteworthy to highlight his milestones and achievements. His journey from a dedicated leader of the 7th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to a Distinguished Senator exemplifies a profound commitment to public service, legislative excellence, and transformative leadership. In fact, Senator Aniekan Bassey has shaped policy, improved lives, and inspired communities through the RHABYESS Foundation, his brainchild and pet project.
Again, as we reflect on his legacy journey in the Red Chambers of the 10th National Assembly, we recognize the profound difference he has made in forging a brighter future for his constituents, the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District. It has been one year of impactful representation.
Inaugurated into the Nigerian Senate on the 13th day of June, 2023, with a vision of progress and a mission to serve, represent and speak for the people of Etinan, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Itu, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium, Uruan and Uyo local Government Areas, Senator Aniekan Bassey, has rendered several humanitarian services across Akwa Ibom State including free medical services, empowerment of young entrepreneurs and rural women, shelters to widows and scholarships to indigent students, civic and worship centres to communities, as well as cars and cash gifts to supporters.
His capacity and commitment to service also got him inaugurated into the 6th Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the 4th day of April, 2024, to promote the integration and unity of the Africa Sub-Region.
From the very beginning, Senator Bassey prioritized listening to the people and truly engaging with the people. He is on a journey to bring meaningful changes to the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District and beyond, little wonder his Shelter Project is without boundary. Built and furnished a 2-Bedroom Bungalow for a widow in Afaha Obong, Abak Local Government Area; built and furnished a 2-Bedroom Bungalow for a widow in Ikot Ntuk Village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, and many more.
The empowerment list of Senator Aniekan Bassey is endless. He has supported over 193 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), empowered over 101 rural women and 546 supporters with seed money for businesses, trained 36 artisans in woodwork, metal fabrication, deep water/surface welding, automobile repairs/maintenance and oven-baked spraying, and done four medical outreaches.
As Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, addressing infrastructure challenges has been critical to Senator Bassey's plan for the prosperity of Akwa Ibom State. He has embark on 1Km Road Construction (Ekim Enen), Financial Assistance and Installation of Solar Street Lights in Uruan, Nsit Atai and selected locations in Uyo including Uyo Club, Udosen Uko street, Akpan Etuk Street, Bassey Etim Street, Etuk Ekpat Street, Akpan Etuk Lanes, Ifa Atai Street, Okon Sampson Street, Nsukara Offot NEPA Line, Udo Etuk Street, Akpabio Crescent at Shelter, Jubilee Estate, Usen Bassey Street, Akwa Ibom North-East Consultative Forum Secretariat, etc
Understanding the importance of human capital development and direct engagement, Senator Bassey registered over 2000 students in the 2024 UTME, facilitated employment of 5 sons and daughters of the Senatorial District into the Federal Civil Service. Senator Aniekan Bassey’s approach has been simple yet effective. He listens. He understands. And he acts.
On the legislative front, Senator Bassey quickly established himself as a proactive and dedicated lawmaker. Within his first year, he sponsored several key Bills aimed at improving infrastructure in Akwa Ibom North-East. Some of his Bills include Price Control Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023; Nigerian Agricultural Preservation Council (Establishment etc.) Bill, 2024, and Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act (Amendment Bill), 2024 (Seeking to establish a Federal College of Fishery and Aquatic Studies in Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District). It's clear that his focus is on long-term, sustainable development.
He has also a few Motions including Motion Urging the Senate to Investigate the Controversial Make Up Gas (MUG) Reprocessing Deal Involving the Federal Ministry of Finance, Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Calabar Generation Company Limited, and Aquagas Ltd.
And Urgent Need for Enquiry into Implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 with Regards to Potential Exit of International Oil Companies (IOCs) from Nigeria: Case of Exxon Mobil in Akwa Ibom State
Senator Bassey has included people-oriented projects in the 2024 Appropriation and these include Training, Empowerments, Medical Provisions, Constructions, Equipping of Schools, and many more.
Believing in the power of education, Senator Bassey, through his pet project, the RHAB-YESS Foundation, has given full scholarship to over 100 deserving students and he is currently training 500 youths of Akwa Ibom State in Digital Marketing Skills.
Beyond tangible developments, Senator Bassey’s influence is also evident in his role as a mentor and inspiration to young leaders. His journey underscores the importance of integrity, perseverance, and a people-centered approach in governance. By fostering youth empowerment programmes and supporting entrepreneurial ventures, he has laid a foundation for future generations to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
