The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. ( Elder ) Udeme Otong, said he is committed to creating a more conducive working environment for members of the Assembly Press Corps.
Rt. Hon. ( Elder ) Otong, made the promise during a familiarization meeting with the Press Corps last Wednesday at the Assembly's Lodge.
The speaker's assurance followed the presentation of several demands by members of the Press Corps, who highlighted the challenges they face while carrying out their duties.
Speaker Otong expressed appreciation for the Corps' collaboration and timely reportage of legislative activities, urging them to maintain this commitment for the benefit of all stakeholders.
In her presentation, Comrade Abigail Isaac, a correspondent for Daily News Wire at the State Parliament, called for capacity-building initiatives for the Press Corps. She noted that the last training held for members was in May 2017 during the tenure of former Speaker Rt. Hon. ( Barr.) Onofiok Luke.
Comrade Isaac also emphasized the urgent need for a well-equipped Press Centre with internet access to support their work.
Comrade Asuquo Edem, another member of the Press Corps, advocated for an improved welfare package, citing the current economic realities. He also requested the provision of a Press Corps bus to facilitate the mobility of journalists covering the assembly.
Additional requests came from Comrade Nsikak Okon, Comrade Uyouko Usuah, and Comrade Itoro Bassey, who emphasized the need for the Speaker to include members of the Press Corps in his official itinerary, ensuring their participation in key activities and events.
In his reaction, the Press Secretary to the Speaker, Comrade Emmanuel Ebong, appreciated the Speaker for creating time to meet with members of Assembly's Press Corps.
Comrade Ebong remained optimistic that with adequate training and provision of a conducive working environment, members of the Corps shall efficiently report the proceedings of the House.
In response, several members of the House, including Rt. Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem - Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Otobong Bob - Deputy Leader, Rt. Hon. Asuquo Udo - Ikono State Constituencyy, and Hon. Jerry Otu - Ikot Ekpene Obot Akara supported the Speaker’s sentiments. They called for a sustainable working relationship between the Assembly and the Press Corps, stressing the importance of effective communication and collaboration between the legislature and the media.
