The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has dismissed reports alleging a breakdown in its relationship with the Executive Arm of Government, describing such claims as misleading and inconsistent with the realities of governance in the state.
In a statement issued yesterday, Monday and signed by the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, the Assembly clarified that recent events surrounding access to its temporary legislative chamber had been wrongly interpreted as evidence of institutional conflict between the Legislature and the Executive.
The Assembly explained that it is currently holding plenary sessions at the Chambers of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs while renovation works continue at the State House of Assembly Complex. According to the statement, reports suggesting that lawmakers were denied access or obstructed in the discharge of their duties had created a false impression of discord between the two arms of government.
"The Assembly wishes to clarify that there has been no rift in relations between the Legislature and the Executive. Both arms of government continue to work collaboratively and remain united in their commitment to serving the people of Akwa Ibom State," the statement said.
The House noted that any issues that arose were administrative and security-related in nature and had been addressed through established communication channels. It stressed that such matters should not be misconstrued as signs of hostility or institutional disagreement.
Providing further clarification, the Assembly attributed the incident that attracted public attention to a misunderstanding involving security personnel enforcing access procedures within the Government House precincts.
While acknowledging that the development may have caused temporary inconvenience, the House maintained that it neither disrupted legislative activities nor undermined the independence of the Legislature.
The statement emphasized that the temporary relocation of legislative sittings was designed to ensure continuity in the Assembly's constitutional responsibilities while renovation works are ongoing at its permanent complex.
Reaffirming its commitment to good governance, the Assembly stated that it remains dedicated to sustaining a cordial and productive relationship with the Executive Arm of Government in the overall interest of the state.
"The Assembly therefore dismisses any suggestion of a dispute between the Executive and the Legislature. Both institutions remain committed to dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation in advancing good governance in Akwa Ibom State," the statement added.
The House also urged members of the public to disregard speculative reports and continue supporting the efforts of all arms of government toward the development and progress of Akwa Ibom State.
The clarification comes amid growing public interest in reports surrounding recent access restrictions at the temporary legislative chambers, with the Assembly insisting that the incident should not be interpreted as a sign of political tension within the state government.
