The 26th of October, 2026, was more than a birthday celebration. It was a gathering of generations, a convergence of distinguished personalities and a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey of a man whose footprints span engineering, industrial development, entrepreneurship, public service and political leadership.
For Otuekong (Engr.) Offiong Usen Akpabio, turning 80 was an opportunity not merely to count the years but to celebrate a life of accomplishment, acknowledge a legacy of service and draw inspiration from the experiences of a man who has distinguished himself in several spheres of human endeavour.
Family members, friends, political associates, professional colleagues and admirers converged to honour the eminent engineer and industrialist, whose contributions to the development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria have earned him recognition across generations.
The atmosphere at Lamems Hotel, venue for the auspicious occasion was one of gratitude, admiration and heartfelt appreciation, as speaker after speaker took turns to celebrate an elder whose life story reflects the enduring values of knowledge, discipline, enterprise and purposeful leadership.
At the heart of the celebration was a common sentiment: Otuekong Offiong Akpabio is a man whose life and accomplishments deserve to be celebrated while he is alive to witness and appreciate the honour.
Among the prominent personalities who paid glowing tributes to the celebrant was the Political Leader of Uyo Senatorial District, Senator Effiong Bob, who described Engr. Akpabio as a notable icon deserving of recognition and celebration during his lifetime.
His remarks captured the spirit of the occasion: the importance of honouring individuals whose contributions to society have left lasting impressions, rather than waiting until they are no longer around to appreciate their impact.
For many at the gathering, the celebration represented an opportunity to acknowledge a life that has transcended personal success to encompass service, mentorship and contributions to the larger society.
The tributes also highlighted the importance of celebrating accomplished individuals whose experiences and achievements provide valuable lessons for younger generations navigating an increasingly challenging world.
While the birthday celebration provided an opportunity for family and friends to express their affection, Engr. Akpabio's professional journey offered a compelling account of how education, technical expertise and entrepreneurial courage can be harnessed in the service of national development.
Born on October 26, 1946, in Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio displayed academic promise from an early age. He obtained his West African School Certificate with Division One from Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, Uyo, before proceeding to Government College, Umuahia, for his Higher School Certificate studies.
His pursuit of excellence subsequently took him to Loughborough University of Technology in England, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology degree with Honours in Mechanical Engineering in 1972.
He further strengthened his professional credentials with postgraduate studies in Petroleum Engineering at the Shell Institute in The Hague, Holland, and a postgraduate certificate in Project Analysis and Management from the University of Ife, Nigeria.
These academic achievements laid the foundation for a career that would take him from the technical environment of the oil industry into the broader fields of industrial development, public administration and private enterprise.
His professional journey began with Shell BP, where he served in various technical capacities, including Field Petroleum Engineer, Operations Engineer and Petrophysicist.
In 1976, he joined the Cross River State Civil Service as a Senior Industrial Engineer, rising to the position of Chief Industrial Engineer in 1980.
During this period, he contributed to the development of industrial projects, including Qua Steel Products Limited, Eket; Quality Ceramics Limited, Itam; and Sunshine Batteries Limited, Ikot Ekpene.
His involvement in these establishments, including service on their boards from inception through commissioning, reflected a commitment to translating technical knowledge into practical industrial development.
His contributions eventually culminated in his appointment as Chairman of Cross River Limestones Limited, Calabar.
These milestones form an important part of a career that connected engineering expertise with the aspirations of a developing industrial economy.
If his years in public service demonstrated his capacity for technical and administrative leadership, his transition into private enterprise revealed another dimension of his personality: an enduring belief in the power of business to create value and drive economic activity.
As Managing Director and Chief Executive of several enterprises, including Offbam Holdings Limited, Offbam Plastics Limited, Offbam Consulting Engineers, Vita Feeds & Farms, Vita Bakeries and Altimate Investments Limited, Akpabio built business interests across industrial production, engineering consultancy, agriculture, food production, investments and project management.
The diversity of these ventures speaks to a business outlook that extends beyond a single industry.
His involvement in agriculture and food production is particularly significant in a period when Nigeria continues to explore opportunities for strengthening local production, expanding employment and reducing dependence on imported goods.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, his journey offers an important lesson: professional training can provide the foundation for enterprise, while vision, adaptability and a willingness to explore opportunities can open doors beyond one's original field of specialisation.
His achievements also earned him recognition from the engineering profession. In 1990, he received the First Merit Award in Engineering from the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch, in recognition of his contributions to the profession.
Other distinctions included the Cayley Merit Award in Polymer Engineering in England and a competitive Shell BP scholarship that supported his engineering studies abroad.
Beyond his professional and business accomplishments, Akpabio has maintained a presence in public service and political leadership.
He served as Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on Export Processing Zones, contributing to the development of the country's Export Processing Zones Programme.
He also served on the Management Board of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex and the National Board for Technical Education, in addition to membership of the Akwa Ibom State Economic Advisory Committee.
At the grassroots level, he serves as Political Leader of Northern Uruan in Uruan Local Government Area, where his influence extends into community affairs and political development.
His trajectory, from the technical demands of the engineering profession to national public appointments and grassroots leadership, illustrates the varied ways in which professional experience can be brought to bear on public life.
It is a dimension of his career that featured prominently in the tributes at his 80th birthday celebration.
The Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Mr. Godwin Ntukudeh, was among those who acknowledged the celebrant's accomplishments, highlighting his contributions to the state and the country as worthy of emulation.
Similarly, the member representing Etinan Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Paul Ekpo, reflected on Akpabio's numerous contributions and prayed for God's continued preservation of the octogenarian.
He also expressed the hope that the celebrant would continue to make further contributions, while younger generations benefit from his wealth of experience.
Their remarks reinforced one of the central themes of the occasion: that age and achievement should not mark the end of service, but should provide opportunities for reflection, mentorship and the transmission of experience.
One of the more personal moments of the celebration came during the toast by the Governor's Special Assistant on Youths, Mr. Ifiok Akpabio, a son of the celebrant.
Expressing gratitude to God for his father's life, he described him as a man who had served as a bridge for many.
The description was particularly fitting for an occasion that brought together people from different generations and professional backgrounds.
For a man whose life has encompassed technical practice, industrial development, entrepreneurship, public service and political leadership, the idea of being a bridge speaks to more than longevity. It suggests the ability to connect people, open doors, share experience and create pathways for others.
Such a legacy cannot be measured solely by the positions held or the businesses established. It is also reflected in the lives touched, the opportunities created and the lessons passed on to those who follow.
For his family, the celebration was an occasion to acknowledge a patriarch whose journey has extended far beyond the boundaries of the home.
For his associates and political followers, it was a moment to celebrate an elder whose experience continues to command respect.
And for the younger generation, his story offers a reminder that meaningful achievement is often the product of years of preparation, hard work, perseverance and service.
Away from engineering, business and politics, Akpabio has maintained an active social life, with a longstanding interest in sports, particularly tennis.
His association with distinguished social institutions, including the Calabar Sports Club, the University of Calabar Senior Staff Club, Apapa Club and Lagos Tennis Club, reflects an appreciation of fellowship and community engagement.
He served as President of the Calabar Sports Club from 1996 to 1998 and has also served as Patron of Uyo Club and Trustee of the Calabar Sports Club.
These engagements provide another perspective on a personality whose life has not been defined exclusively by professional responsibilities.
They point to the importance of social connections, recreation and shared interests in building relationships that endure beyond the workplace.
At 80, such relationships formed part of the human story behind the celebration: the friendships sustained over the years, the colleagues who became associates, and the family whose presence gave the occasion its deeper emotional significance.
The celebration attracted an array of eminent personalities, reflecting the celebrant's extensive social, professional and political connections.
Among those present were the Managing Director of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), Ms. Usoro Akpabio a daughter of the celebrant, Senator Bassey Akpan, the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. Itoro Etim; and the member representing Ikono State Constituency, Hon. Asuquo Nana.
Also in attendance was a former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Usenobong Akpabio, who chaired the event's planning committee, alongside Hon. Tony Akan, Obong Tony Okpon and wife Margaret and a delegation from the Calabar Sports Club, among other distinguished sons and daughters of the state.
Their presence underscored the breadth of relationships Akpabio has cultivated over the years, bringing together family, politics, business, sports and community life in a celebration of a shared legacy.
At the centre of it all was the celebrant, visibly elated and accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Meme Akpabio.
In his remarks, he expressed profound gratitude to God for bringing him this far in life and appreciation to everyone who had considered him worthy of the celebration.
His response provided a fitting moment of reflection on an occasion characterised by tributes to his accomplishments.
For all the accolades, academic distinctions, business interests and public appointments, his overriding expression was gratitude.
Eight Decades, One Enduring Legacy
Eighty years is a significant milestone in any life. But in the case of Otuekong (Engr.) Offiong Usen Akpabio, the milestone also provides an opportunity to examine a journey that has crossed professional boundaries and embraced several dimensions of public and private life.
From his early academic achievements to his training in engineering, from industrial development to private enterprise, and from national public service to grassroots political leadership, his story is one of sustained engagement with the opportunities and responsibilities that life presents.
His journey also raises an important question for society: how can the experience of accomplished elders be preserved and passed on to younger generations?
At a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with industrial development, youth unemployment, entrepreneurial challenges and the need for effective leadership, the experiences of individuals who have navigated different sectors over several decades remain valuable resources.
The challenge is to ensure that such experience becomes more than a subject of birthday tributes. It must also serve as a source of mentorship, inspiration and practical guidance for those preparing to take up the responsibilities of the future.
That is perhaps the deeper significance of the celebration of Akpabio's 80th birthday.
It was not simply a gathering to mark the passage of time. It was an acknowledgement of a life whose professional accomplishments, entrepreneurial pursuits, public service and political engagement have earned him a place in the story of Akwa Ibom State.
As the tributes gave way to goodwill messages and celebrations, one sentiment stood out: the value of recognising people whose contributions have enriched their communities and whose experiences offer lessons for the future.
For Otuekong (Engr.) Offiong Usen Akpabio, the journey continues, enriched by eight decades of experience and the goodwill of those who gathered to celebrate him.
At 80, he stands not merely as a man who has lived long, but as an accomplished professional, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a political leader and an elder whose life offers a compelling testament to the enduring power of knowledge, vision and service.
As family, friends and associates celebrate this remarkable milestone, their prayers are for continued good health, peace, wisdom and fulfilment in the years ahead.
For a life that has touched so many spheres of endeavour, the most fitting tribute may be that the legacy of Otuekong Offiong Akpabio will continue to inspire generations long after the birthday candles have been extinguished.
