The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has called for urgent government intervention to halt the devastating erosion menace threatening lives, property and socio-economic activities in Ikot Nkpo Village, Mbiabong Edem Edik, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.
The resolution of the House followed a motion raised by member representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency, Hon. Moses Essien and seconded by his Esit Eket/ Ibeno counterpart, Hon. Udobia Udoh, for consideration during Tuesday's plenary.
While describing the situation as an urgent environmental and infrastructure emergency requiring immediate attention from the state government and relevant agencies, Essien noted with regret the negative impact the continued erosion menace has posed to residents and infrastructure, hence, disrupting economic and social activities across the affected communities.
Essien attributed the erosion crisis to the 2020 drainage project construction of the Ibiatuk–Ntan Ekere–Mbiabong Edem Edik Road by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He explained that although deep drainage channels were constructed on both sides of the road, the channels were allegedly left incomplete without adequate discharge outlets into the adjoining natural stream.
“The heavy volume of storm water flowing from Ibiatuk Village through Ntan Ekere, Ikot Obio Edep, Obot Ukana and adjoining communities now empties into the incomplete drainage system at Ikot Nkpo Village, resulting in severe gully erosion.”
“This is no longer a minor environmental challenge. The situation is alarming and life-threatening, and it requires urgent intervention before further damage is done to lives, property and critical infrastructure” he said.
He noted that the deteriorating road and erosion have adversely affected transportation, commercial activities, access to markets, movement of agricultural produce, healthcare delivery, education and other essential socio-economic activities.
The Ibiono Ibom Lawmaker , appealed to the state government to respond swiftly, stressing that the intervention would help protect residents while restoring access and economic activities in the affected communities.
His words “Our people deserve safe roads, functional infrastructure and an environment where they can go about their daily activities without fear. We cannot afford to wait until the situation becomes completely uncontrollable before we act.”
Essien, however, acknowledged the state government's commitment to rural development and infrastructure rehabilitation under the Arise Agenda, urging the relevant authorities to extend such intervention to the affected communities.
The House subsequently resolved to urge the Akwa Ibom State Government, through the Ministries of Works and Fire Service and Environment, to undertake an emergency assessment of the erosion site with a view to initiating actions aimed at controlling the menace for the safety of lives and property as well as restoring the socio- economic activities of the affected people.
In his ruling, the speaker, Rt. Hon.( Elder )Udeme Otong, also mandated the House Committee on Environment to monitor compliance with the resolutions by relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other stakeholders and report back to the House within six weeks.
The House has adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, 6th October 2026 at 12 noon.
