2018/2019 NPFL: Akwa Untd Chair Reads Riot Act To Coaches, Players

The Chairman of Akwa United Football Club Elder Paul Bassey has charged the technical crew and players of the team to redouble their efforts and turn in positive results that will help the team to achieve its target in the 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

In a Press Release signed by the club's Media Manager Mr. Mfon Patrick quoted the Chairman Elder Paul Bassey as saying that the recent results does not reflect the quality he has in the team and called on the Coaches and the players to stand up and be counted.

At half time during Matchday 5 in Lafia on Monday, the Chairman tongue lashed the players for what he described as "the worst showing of an Akwa United team since he came on board three years ago".

Elder Bassey also hit out at the coaching crew after the match in Nasarawa and urged them to sit up, stressing that in four years of Governor Udom Emmanuel's administration, Akwa United had become a brand and a household name not befitting the current abysmal results.

"Before the start of the season, the football fratanity in Nigeria applauded the quality signings we made and the team's preparations only for us to disappoint our teeming fans.

"It is unbelievable to see Akwa United at the bottom of the table after four matches in this abridged version of the league, this is unacceptable and we cannot continue this way. Many teams have won away from home this season, so what stops us from achieving that too!. You have to fight so we can get the desired result week in week out.

"You all came to this club on merit so you cannot afford to disappoint our fans and supporters, you should not let yourselves down because this is your careers. Whoever is selected at any given time must be ready to put in his very best. It is your duty to defend your name and your badge by playing first and foremost for yourselves as
professional footballers.
You have to prove your worth in the field and move this club to where she rightly belong.

"That we have just two points from a possible 12 is disappointing and shocking. We still have 18 more matches to redeem the image of this club. You all have to redouble your efforts and be more business-like in approach so we can achieve our aim".

Elder Bassey called on the team to ensure they justify their pay by returning to winning ways as soon as possible starting with this weekend's home game against Go Round FC.

Akwa United's shock 0-1 home defeat to El-Kanemi Warriors on the opening day and two successive draws against Kano Pillars and Plateau United before their 2-0 defeat to Nasarawa United on Monday is the team's worst start to a season in recent history.
