Onofiok To A'Ibom Workers: Your Inputs, Part Of Legislature's Success Story

The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barr. Onofiok Luke has described numerous inputs sent in by Akwa Ibom Workers through NLC and TUC as part of what has aided the Legislature to succeed.

Read below Extracts from Speaker Onofiok Luke’s remarks today at the 2019 Workers Workers Day Celebration in Uyo:

·         I express our appreciation to Akwa Ibom Workers for standing up to be counted in the new Akwa Ibom. First, you unanimously endorsed Governor Udom Emmanuel for second term when many people did not believe he was going to win that election. You came out en masse to endorse him and went further to mobilise workers to vote him and have him re-elected based on his performance in his first term.

·         On the 1st of May 2016, I had the opportunity to stand before you, Akwa Ibom workers, to promise you that the legislature will cooperate with the executive and the judiciary so that the benefit of workers and Akwa Ibom will be delivered by the Chief-Visioner, who is the governor. Four years after, we can beat our chest and say we gave our cooperation and supported the governor and the other arm of government and that is why you have seen the peace and the development which has translated to the boosting of workers welfare in Akwa Ibom.

·         I want to thank the NLC and the TUC for joining hands with us to make our work easy in the legislature. There is never a time that we have invited you for public hearing that you have never turned up to make your inputs into the bills and the resolutions we pass. Let me mention here specifically that in the year 2018, the position of NLC was what led to the increase in the allocation to the social sector of the budget of that fiscal year of 2018.

·         Going forward, we pledge our commitment to continue to support the governor of our state, and to reciprocate that love which you showed to us during the last general election by working selflessly for the benefit of Akwa Ibom people.

·         I have a message for the leaders of Nigeria on this Workers Day. The time has come that the leaders must put their hands together and look beyond party. We need a bipartisan approach to solving the crisis which we are facing in the country. Today there is insecurity in Nigeria, and it is affecting everyone; it is affecting the workers. I urge the president to rise and mobilise the entire leadership of Nigeria, the entire workers, so that we can put a stop to this insecurity. Without security in the country, there is not going to be foreign direct investments. Without foreign direct investment, businesses are not going to expand, and without business expansions, there will be no jobs. So I urge the president to rise to the occasion and adopt a bipartisan approach to tackle the challenge of insecurity in our country.

·         Finally, we pledge to support the governor to pursue the actualisation of the Akwa Ibom project which is to build a united, prosperous, educated and healthy state under one leadership and under one God.
