Corona Virus Scare: Akwa Ibom Lawmakers Charge Health Ministry To Step Up



Irked by the threat posed by the dreaded Corona Virus, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has urged the Ministry of Health to strengthen its Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Committee in order to prevent the virus from spreading to the State.

The resolution followed a Motion sponsored by the Member representing Etinan State Constituency, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Aniefiok Dennis and ten others at Plenary on Thursday.

Rt. Hon. Dennis in his Motion entitled "Intensification of Akwa Ibom State Infectious Disease Preventive Measures as Nigeria Records First Confirmed Case of Coronavirus", informed the House that more than 3,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), have been recorded since the outbreak of what he termed global virus.

He pointed out that the developmental strides recorded by the current administration has opened up the state airspace and road network thus making the state more accessible, nationally and internationally.

The House, after deliberations on the Motion, called on the Ministry of Health to immediately deploy personnel, special protective equipment and other necessary facilities including hand sanitizers and infrared thermometers to hospitals, airport, public offices, schools and other entry routes into the state.

It also directed that the Isolation Centre at Ikot Ekpene be made fully functional by the state government while the Ministry of Information and Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM) should aggressively embark on extensive and intensive awareness, sensitisation across the state on the Coronavirus epidemic.

It further urged the Ministry of Transport in conjunction with the Ministry of Health to ensure that Motor Parks and public transport systems are provided with hand sanitizers and other protective equipment.

At Plenary also, the House received a Motion on Abandonment of Ikot Osukpong-Urua Inyang-Ikot Uko Road in Ika Local Government Area from the Member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika. The Motion was referred to the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for fact finding and impact assessment.

Similarly, A Bill for a Law to Establish the Akwa Ibom State Consumer Protection Agency, Provide for the Protection of the Interest of Consumers, Settlement of Consumer Disputes and for Other Connected Purposes, sponsored by the Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Hon. (Barr.) Ese Umoh passed through First Reading, while the Akwa Ibom State Private Healthcare Providers Management Agency Bill sponsored by the Member representing Abak State Constituency, Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong passed through Second Reading.
