Breaking: Akwa Ibom IGR Hits 32.3billion

By Substance Nature

By generating about N32.3billion  Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) in fiscal year 2019,  Akwa Ibom State has continued its impressive growth trends in the past three years and that has placed the State in the 7th position in the nationwide ranking released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), last weekend.

According to the latest report by the NBS, a national body that monitors and publishes statistics of sectoral and composite growth patterns of private, corporate and government organizations in the country, Akwa Ibom has launched itself and retained its position as one of the top economically vibrant States in the country under the celebrated leadership of Gov. Udom Emmanuel.

By this rapid leap, the stellar performance sees the State occupying the 5th and 3rd positions in the entire South and South-South/South-East geopolitical zones of the country, respectively. In the South-South/South East of the country, Akwa Ibom comes next only to Rivers and Delta States.

Findings have shown that this record-breaking  performance has been achieved barely three years following the constitution and  inauguration of the incumbent Board of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), headed by a seasoned administrator and financial expert, Mr. Okon Okon, in April 2017 by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Further investigations have shown that Akwa Ibom was  occupying the 18th position on the  2016 fiscal year report by the same body. With the State having recorded N32.3b in 2019, against the N24.2billion it struck in the previous year (2018), the State has recorded a whooping increase of 33.3 percent.

The recent achievement therefore can best be described as a leapfrogging in internal revenue generation indices and economic growth patterns in the history of the state.

Another interesting and deeper contextual analysis shows that Akwa Ibom has not only outclassed some big-name and older states in the country, but has comfortably situated itself among the first 10 in rapid growth occasioned by good governance and proactive leadership of the State governor.

The 2019 NBS performance reports indicate that, while Lagos tops the chart with N398, 732, 246, 493.38; Rivers States recorded N140, 398, 744, 393. 70; FCT N74, 564, 180, 835. 31; Ogun N70, 922,'590,:495.89; and Delta 64, 678, 796, 991. 57.

Others States in the first 10 include Kaduna N44, 956,'776,'583.38; Kano N40, 593, 701, 332. 48; Akwa Ibom 32, 291, 014, 771. 52; while N31, 069, 466, 913.00 is for Enugu, and Kwara at N30, 646, 731, 408. 92.

On the other hand, the last three States with the lowest performance for the period under review are Kebbi N7, 367, 334, 9837.23; Gombe  6, 803,064,814.10; and Taraba State standing at the base with N6,533,106,447.27.

Among other things, while AKIRS Management must be commended for bringing high level professionalism, patriotism and  diligence into the revenue generation economics and  taxation management in the State, social commentators posit that the recent result simply points to the holistic and integrated economic transformation and developmental trajectory spearheaded by the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

With this latest ranking and listing of Akwa Ibom in the exclusive comity of vibrant States in the country, and judged by the superlative socioeconomic policies aggressively and progressively piloted by the Gov. Emmanuel-led administration, which is anchored on industrialization towards total socioeconomic renaissance of the fast-rising and promising State,   experts are already foreseeing greater breakthroughs with strong potentials to lift and make Akwa Ibom a fierce competitor to even well- rooted States like Lagos, Rivers, Kaduna and Kano in no distant future.

Experts also maintained that the commendable performance by AKIRS is a clear proof of Governor Emmanuel's rare ingenuity and ability to hire the right persons to join him in interpreting his vision for the State.
