CRISIS LOOMS IN EASTERN OBOLO.. .AS PLOT TO CEDE OIL WELLS, COMMUNITIES TO ONNA, MKPAT ENIN AND IKOT ABASI IS UNCOVERED
The people of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have condemned in strongest terms a resolution by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for a new map for Akwa Ibom State, describing the idea as illegal and fraudulent against Eastern Obolo Local Government Area which is a creation of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The aggrieved people under the aegis of ILIMA Obolo vowed to vehemently resist any attempt by government or any group to distort their historical heritage, geographic and demographic linkages through adjustment of the official map of Akwa Ibom State, noting that it is a calculated sinister plot specifically aimed at depriving the people of Eastern Obolo of their natural and bonafide endowments and entitlements, upon the existing marginalization they have experienced from successive administrations of the State.
Speaking on behalf of Obolo people, ILIMA Obolo, a frontline socio-cultural cum political organization in Obolo Nation, made their position known through a communiqué issued at the end of a press conference, signed by Secretary of the body, Dr. Amah Williams, held in Uyo, at the weekend.
Wondering why the remapping suddenly became necessary just days following the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act, the body maintained that the ulterior motives of the plotters of the evil idea is to cede parts of Eastern Obolo to other local government areas because of covetousness and politics. The communiqué therefore called on the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, “to completely disregard the unpopular and anti-people resolution” if he is detribalised leader.
Recall that on Thursday, 16th September, 2021, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly reached a resolution sequel to a motion moved by Member representing Eket State Constituency, Rt. Hon. David Lawrence, mandating the Surveyor-General of the State to “take immediate and appropriate steps to produce a new map for the State and ensure it is approved and gazetted”. Part of the resolution also directed that “all obnoxious, obsolete and inappropriate enactments or such processes concerning, affecting and relating to proper mapping should be urgently reviewed”.
Picking holes in the resolution by the House, ILIMA Obolo stated that, after a painstaking study of the said map, they have discovered a grand plot by some persons in power to claim what is not and has never been theirs just because they felt they have the apparatuses to do so now, without any resistance from the people.
With God on our side we will win these Battle
