The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has passed a resolution, urging Governor Umo Eno to direct the Commissioner for Transport in liaison with security Chiefs and Commissioner of Police for the enforcement of the ban on motorcyclists operating on restricted routes in Uyo, the state capital.
The resolution of the House is sequel to notice on motion on the need to Re- Enforce Ban and Prosecution of Motorcyclists Plying Unauthorized Areas within Uyo Metropolis, brought before it by the member for Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Hon. Uwem Imo-Ita at Thursday's plenary in Uyo.
Imo-Ita, whose motion was seconded by the member for Ini State Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Udoide for deliberation on the floor of the Assembly, expressed displeasure on the nonchalant attitude of defaulters who trade with impunity by deliberately plying the Unauthorized areas, using their motorcycles even at broad daylight not minding the consequences of the law.
The Mkpat Enin Lawmaker, was most saddened that the law enforcement agencies who are supposed to enforce the law are the major defaulters, hence not leading by example.
He pleaded with the leadership and members of the Assembly to support him by prevailing on the Governor to direct the Commissioner for Transport to work in liaison with the Security Chiefs and the Commissioner of Police to reactivate the law for the arrest and prosecution of the offenders to serve as deterrent to others.
Imo-Ita, called for the extension of directive to the Management and Personnel of the Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Commission ( EARCOM ) to step up public enlightenment campaign to educate the Akwa Ibom general public on the gravity of the offense, and consequent arrest of any person contravening the law.
The member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Hon. Moses Essien and his Ibesikpo Asutan counterpart, Hon. Pastor. Ubong Essien Attah who spoke in support of the motion, frowned at the fragrant abuse of the law, emphasizing the need for the sensitization of the public on the existing law and state governor to direct appropriate authorities to swing into action with a view to enforcing the law in the best interest of the government and the people.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. ( Elder ) Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the resolution of the House on the matter to the Governor, to issue directive to appropriate authorities for the enforcement of the ban.
