Aniekeme Uwah Bags International Appointment




The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has appointed Dr Aniekeme Aniefiok Uwah as her first ever Senior Country Representative for the Federal Democratic of Ethiopia.


Prior to his recent appointment, Dr. Uwah, who is a distinguished Medical Doctor and Epidemiologist with an extensive international and local experience had served as a National Coordinator for Ethiopia of the Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) program, a flagship initiative of the Africa Centres for Disease Control (Africa CDC).


Dr. Uwah’s career includes significant contributions towards the control of the worst Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in history, where he served as an Epidemiologist in the Republic of Liberia from 2014 to 2015 under the auspices of the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA). 


Furthermore, he had served as the Team Doctor for pilgrims from Akwa Ibom State to Jerusalem, Israel, in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.


In Nigeria, Dr. Uwah held the position of State Coordinator for the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Control and Elimination Programme from 2020 to 2023. He had also served as the State Epidemiologist for nine years from 2011 to 2020 during which period he made substantial contributions towards the disruption of transmission of the Wild Polio Virus and declaration of Nigeria as a polio free country. He also developed the Incident Action Plan (IAP) for the COVID-19 response in the state.


A dedicated member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), he had held various leadership roles, including National Publicity Secretary from 2020 to 2022 and Chairman of both the NMA Akwa Ibom State Branch and South-South Caucus from 2016 to 2018.


Dr. Uwah's remarkable contributions to public health have been recognized through various awards, including:


- An award of recognition from the government and people of Liberia for his exceptional efforts in controlling the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak (2014-2015).


- An award of appreciation from the African Union for demonstrating pan-Africanism during the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak.


- A distinguished honors award from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as the most outstanding state branch Chairman in 2017.


- A letter of appreciation from Helen Keller International for his contributions to NTD control in Akwa Ibom State in 2022.


- ⁠An award of excellence from the Federal Ministry of Health as the most outstanding State Coordinator of the NTDs Control and Elimination Programme in Nigeria in 2023.


Dr. Uwah's achievements reflect his robust educational background, which includes three professional degrees namely a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) from the University of Calabar, Master of Public Health (MPH) ( Field Epidemiology and Biostatistics) from the University of Ibadan and Master of Public Health (MPH) ( with merit ) from  the University of  Dundee, United  Kingdom. 


He also has two internationally recognized certifications which include a certificate of completion of the Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) ( Advanced Course) and a certificate in leadership and management in health from the University of Washington.


He is happily married to Aver Ishoribo-uwah  Esq and they have four children.
