The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), Ms. Usoro Akpabio, has reaffirmed her commitment to advancing digital empowerment for women, declaring that Nigeria’s future competitiveness depends on strengthening female leadership through technology-driven skills.
Akpabio made the assertion while delivering a keynote address at a two-day capacity-building training for spouses of Honourable Members of the House of Representatives. The programme was organised in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), as part of broader efforts to deepen digital literacy and inclusion nationwide.
“When women leaders strengthen their digital competence, they are not merely learning technology — they are shaping Nigeria’s future,” Akpabio stated. “Digital skills are the currency of modern relevance, and empowerment must move from rhetoric to infrastructure.”
She revealed that the pilot phase of the digital training programme had already been successfully conducted in Gombe, Uyo, and the Federal Capital Territory, signalling what she described as a growing national footprint and a scalable model for inclusive development.
The high-level event drew prominent government officials and stakeholders, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and Chairperson of the House of Representatives Spouses Association, Fatima Abbas Tajudeen, among other dignitaries.
Reiterating SSDC’s strategic direction, Akpabio said the Commission would continue to invest in digital inclusion initiatives, computer-based testing (CBT) infrastructure, and structured skills-to-income pathways across the South-South region.
“Nigeria’s future will be defined not just by oil wells, but by knowledge wells built in training rooms like this,” she added.
The initiative underscores a growing emphasis on leveraging digital capacity-building as a catalyst for economic participation and national development.
