Wife of the Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mrs Itohowo Bassey, has urged women in the state, to play active roles in the sustenance of peace and development in the society.

Mrs Bassey gave the charge at the One-day Seminar organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Women Affairs on the Theme, Royal Women and Healthy Living at the Women Development Centre, IBB Way, Uyo, on Monday.

While lauding organisers of the programme, the Speaker's Wife described women as custodians of peace and unity and called on them to foster societal development by training their children in the fear of God.

She further appealed to the women to put into practise necessary health tips offered at the event and advised them to remain hardworking, prayerful and supportive to their families.

The Keynote Speaker at the event, Mrs Bassey Eshiet, urged the women to help curtail societal ills by advising their children and family members against drug abuse, alcoholism and cultism.

While making a case for women to be carried along in decision making processes, Mrs Eshiet particularly condemned harmful practices on the girl child and said those still practising acts like the Female Genital Mutilation would be brought to book by the state government.

Earlier in her welcome Address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Women Affairs, Dr Glory Edet, commended the Royal Mothers for gracing the event in their large numbers, saying the programme was aimed at aiding their personal development and fostering peace and good health amongst them.

She lauded the State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel and Wife, Martha, for carrying the Royal Mothers along in the scheme of things in the state and appealed to the women to remain steadfast with the current administration.

The event was attended members of Legislators' Wives Association (LEWA), female Permanent Secretaries, wives of Paramount Rulers, Clan, Village and Family Heads, across the state.
