The Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Okobo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey, has challenged political leaders and stakeholders to pay sufficient and pragmatic attention to the challenges facing education in the state and country.
The two-term lawmaker made the remarks earlier today on receiving an award of Excellence in Community Development and Women Empowerment from the Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, during the Annual National Conference on Education, held in the Onyema Okechukwu Hall of the University.
Rt. Hon. Princess Bassey emphasized her using her political platform for community development, women emancipation and youth Empowerment was motivated by her passion and the compelling necessity in those areas.
Available record indicates that, as a former chairman of Okobo Local Government Area and ranking state Legislator, the Deputy Speaker is best known and celebrated for the lofty and all- embracing content of her constituency Empowerment programmes.
Of note is the fact that she has made provision for training of youth and women of Okobo in various vocations and provided qualified ones with basic tools and equipment. Other packages include a sustainable scholarship scheme indigent non-indigent Students in various tertiary institutions across the country, bought JAMB forms for over 1000 Candidates, etc.
These and more are the Deputy Speaker's general advocacy and cerebral contributions in the House of Assembly were some of the things that justified the award.
Presenting the prestigious award to the Deputy Speaker, immediate past Vice Chancellor of University of Uyo, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, said the recognition was long overdue.
The renowned parliamentarian who was accompanied to the occasion by a host of her political colleagues and supporters including the Council Chairman of Okobo,Rt. Hon. Ubuo Ubuo, PDP Chapter Chairman, Hon. Maurice Fimba, State PDP officer, Elder Emmanuel George, former Leader, Okobo Legislative Council, Hon. Deacon Asuquo Koffi,Hon. Pastor Joe Offong, Okobo PDP Youth Leader, Mr. Asukwo Nduonyi, Prince Monday Umana, former Aides to the Governor, Councilors, Supervisors, others expressed appreciation and said the honour will encourage her to do more.
The four Days Conference of eggheads has as its theme: Politicizing Education in Nigeria; Implications for National Development.
