Dilapidated Nung Ukim Ukwok Road Worries AKHA, Seek Govt Immediate Intervention

Moved by the cry for help from the people of Ukwok Community in Ini Local Government Area, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has sent an urgent call to the State Government to intervene on the Nung Ukim-Ukwok Road.

Rising from a motion brought pursuant to Order III Rule I presented before the House yesterday during Plenary, the member representing Ini State Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Udoide stated that the road is one of the most important road networks in Ini Local Government Area "with Okon River which links the Aba Itiat and Atan communities with Nung Ukim, Ikot Idut, Usuk Ukwok" which he noted  has finally

become a death trap for the people and has brought life to a complete stall for them.

While commending the State Governor, Mr. Umo Eno for the numerous life-touching programs so far undertaken just few days of assumption of

office, the Lawmaker who is the Chairman House Services Committee stated that though the people of the communities had fabricated a concrete bridge to facilitate

movement, the local bridge has since been dilapidated and washed away by flood and has separated the people from commercial and social interaction where the people now feel estranged in their own state.

Hon. Udoide expressed worry that the situation has occasioned serious hardship to the people where "farmers cannot convey their farm produce to the market; schools are closed; hospital and health clinics cannot be accessed; pregnant women are compelled to patronize traditional birth attendants; life expectancy is low; morbidity and mortality rates are high. People are helpless and hope would be far from sight without prompt intervention by our amiable Governor in the ARISE

AGENDA".

He called on the Speaker to mandate the House Committee on Works and Transport; and the House Committee on Rural Development and Public Utilities to as a matter of urgency, visit and undertake inspection of Nung Ukim – Ukwok –

Road, appraise the condition of the affected communities for fact

finding and intelligence gathering; while also calling on His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State

to direct appropriate remedial measures to ameliorate and rescue the

affected communities.

The Speaker in his submission refered the matter to the House Committee on Works/Transport and also Committee on Rural Development/Public Utilities to report back in two weeks.

The House was adjourned to Thursday 20th July.
