In a major step toward addressing persistent power supply challenges in Akwa Ibom State, the State House of Assembly has confirmed five nominees forwarded by Governor Pastor Umo Eno to serve as commissioners of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC), reinforcing the administration’s drive to reposition the electricity sector.
The confirmation, which followed the screening of the nominees during Tuesday’s plenary at the Old Assembly Chamber, Uyo, is seen as a significant follow-up to Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions to epileptic power supply across the state.
Those confirmed are Engr. Ubong Etukudoh for Engineering, Dr. Valerie Okon Obot for Finance and Corporate Services, Mr. Paul Okon for Economic Regulation, Dr. Kalu Ukoha for Policy, Planning and Innovation, and Ms. Arit Okon-Uya for Stakeholder Engagement and Consumer Affairs.
The confirmation came after the House considered and adopted the report of its Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions, presented by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Aniefiok Attah. The motion for confirmation was moved by House Leader, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, and seconded by Deputy Leader, Hon. Nsidibe Akata.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, who announced the confirmation, described the process as another milestone in the state’s electricity reform efforts, especially following the passage of the Akwa Ibom Electricity Bill in 2024.
Lawmakers commended Governor Umo Eno for assembling what they described as a competent team of professionals with the expertise to help tackle longstanding electricity concerns and deepen regulatory reforms in the sector.
The nominees represent the first batch of commissioners sent to the Assembly for confirmation under the new electricity regulatory framework, underscoring the governor’s resolve to operationalize the commission and advance reforms capable of boosting power generation, distribution oversight and consumer protection.
In a related development, the House also urged the State Government to intensify efforts toward improving public secondary education infrastructure, calling for the provision of standard science laboratories in public schools across the state.
The lawmakers further recommended the construction of perimeter fencing around public secondary schools to curb criminal activities and vandalism, while advocating collaboration with the Ibom Community Watch and other security agencies to safeguard school facilities.
The resolutions followed the adoption of a report presented by the House Committee on Education, chaired by Hon. Onofiok Kenim, after consultations with the Commissioner for Education, the State Secondary Education Board and other stakeholders.
Speaking during deliberations, Hon. Udobia Friday Udo stressed the need for due process and proper management of resources to improve outcomes for citizens.
At the close of plenary, Speaker Udeme Otong directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the House’s decisions to Governor Umo Eno for implementation.
The House thereafter adjourned plenary to Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
