Scorecard: Senator Aniekan Bassey's Two Years Of Service To Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District




Senator Aniekan Bassey, a member of the 10th Senate and the 6th Legislature of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, has made remarkable strides, demonstrating his capacity to deliver democratic dividends to the people of the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.


 LEGISLATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS

From the outset of his tenure, Senator Aniekan Bassey introduced bills and Motions that underscored his commitment to transparency and accountability. They are:


BILLS

1. Price Control Act (Amendment) Bill 2023

2. Nigerian Agricultural Preservation Council (Establishment) Bill 2024

3. Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, which sought to establish a Federal College of Fishery and Aquatic Studies in Akwa Ibom North-East, and

4. A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, Cap. C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (As Altered), to among other things expand the meaning of Judicial Office as set out in Section 318 and for related matters, and the “Investment Assurance Bill 2025.

5. A Bill for an Act to alter the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to protect the right of an unborn child being carried by a pregnant woman sentenced to death, provides for the right to a healthy and clean environment and expand the definition of “torture, inhuman or degrading treatment,” and for related matters.


MOTION

1. A motion to investigate the controversial Make-Up Gas (MUG) reprocessing deal involving the Federal Ministry of Finance, Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Calabar Generation Company Limited, and Acugas Limited.

2. A motion on the urgent need for enquiry into the Implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 with regards to the potential exit of International Oil Companies (IOCs) from Nigeria: A case of ExxonMobil in Akwa Ibom State.


3. Motion on the urgent need to investigate the illegal annexation of Nigerian Mangrove Islands situated at Efiat in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State by the Republic of Cameroon.












 


EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Senator Aniekan Bassey has strongly advocated for education and infrastructure. To ensure its actualization, he visited the Federal Ministry of Education, where he pushed for the release of unpaid take-off grants for the University of Uyo and the newly established Federal College of Education, Ididep. The grants have been paid.


To further deepen his commitment to education and community development, Senator Aniekan Bassey, in November 2024, through his pet project, the RHAB-YESS Foundation, stormed his alma mater, Christ the King International School, Uyo, and schools within the district with a back-to-school empowerment initiative. 


The back-to-school initiative provided benefiting schools with vital educational materials designed to improve standards and create more conducive learning environments in the district.  Among the educational materials donated were textbooks, exercise books, school bags, whiteboards, desks, chairs, mathematical sets, laptops, desktop computers, and other classroom essentials.

COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS (SOLAR-POWERED STREETLIGHT)


To complement Governor Umo Eno’s A.R.I.S.E Agenda, Senator Aniekan Bassey initiated the following projects: Installation of solar-powered streetlights in Itu, Uyo, Nsit Atai, and Uruan LGAs.

CLASSROOM BLOCK

Commenced construction of a 3-Classroom Block at Methodist College, Afaha Atai, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.


BOREHOLE PROJECT

Commenced construction of a solar-powered borehole at Ikot Otong, Nsit Ibom LGA. The same facility would be replicated in other LGAs within the senatorial district.


SOCIAL INITIATIVES AND HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTIONS

To enhance media productivity, Senator Aniekan Bassey, in January 2025, donated laptop computers to selected members of the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and one laptop to Miss Favour Inyangette Inyang, 1st Prize Winner of the 2024 Ibom Creative Writing Competition, a student of Beulah International School. 


Registered 200 students in the 2024 UTME and enrolled more than 100 students in his scholarship scheme. In the 2025 UTME, he registered 523 students.


At the end of his doctoral degree thesis in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Uyo, Senator Aniekan Bassey donated a range of ICT tools and accessories to the department to boost research resources.


In January 2025, he secured relief materials for victims of the flood from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). 


YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND EMPLOYMENT

In 2024, Senator Aniekan Bassey trained and empowered 500 youths in Digital Marketing. For 2025, he has initiated plans to train at least 1,000 youths in AI-focused digital skills.


Facilitated appointments into government and private agencies, including Federal Civil Service, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Army, Nigeria Air Force, Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Fire Service, Sharia Court of Appeal, National Assembly Commission, Federal College of Education- Ididep, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-YPPDEC).


In September 2024, Senator Aniekan Bassey embarked on a comprehensive agro-empowerment of youths of the senatorial district, where he trained 50 youths in various agro-businesses with a complete disbursement of N50 million grants to enhance their entry into the agribusiness.


 


In October 2024, Senator Aniekan Bassey distributed 3,600 bags of fertilizers to farmers across the district in continuation of his commitment to agricultural development and food security. 


In December 2024, Senator Aniekan Bassey exposed youths and rural women to specialized agricultural training programmes on yam and cassava by-product processing and preservation to uplift their economic fortunes. They were empowered with grants worth N100 million.

 


Still in December 2024, Senator Aniekan Bassey trained and empowered 100 youths of the district on Strategic Leadership and Policy Making for Management Development.  


In the area of security and policing, Senator Aniekan Bassey, in October 2024, trained and empowered 60 youths of the Senatorial District as Spy Police Officers to enhance the work of the Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State.


In April 2025, Senator Aniekan Bassey trained and empowered selected petty traders within the senatorial district. 


In May 2025, Senator Aniekan Bassey trained and empowered 150 constituents in agriculture production, distributed Oil Palm seedlings and Fertilizers (Phase One).


In June, Senator Aniekan Bassey trained and empowered 150 constituents in agriculture production, distributed Oil Palm seedlings and Fertilizers (Phase-Two)


 HEALTHCARE DELIVERY


In the area of healthcare, Senator Aniekan Bassey, between August and September 2024, rolled out a comprehensive free medical and surgical outreach where over 10,000 residents of the district were attended to. The outreach aimed at providing much-needed medical attention to residents of the senatorial district. It offered a wide range of services, including surgeries, general health tests, treatments, drugs, and reading glasses dispensations. The outreach took place at the Methodist General Hospital, Ituk Mbang, and the General Hospital, Etinan.


Senator Aniekan Bassey has also distributed essential drugs and medical consumables to Primary Healthcare Centres across the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District. The benefiting healthcare centres included:
