Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State came alive with excitement and gratitude on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, as the Member representing Okobo State Constituency, Hon. Bassey Pius Bassey, rolled out a large-scale empowerment programme, distributing a wide array of tools, machinery, vehicles, and cash grants to constituents.
The Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme, held at Government Model Primary School, Okobo, attracted top government functionaries, political stakeholders, and a jubilant crowd of beneficiaries who turned out in their numbers to witness what many described as one of the most impactful grassroots interventions in recent times.
The empowerment package featured an extensive list of items tailored to support small businesses and skilled trades. Beneficiaries received plastic welding and vulcanising machines, gasoline generators, tile cutting and drilling machines, sewing machines, grinders, hair dryers, and filling machines. Others went home with higher-value assets including outboard engines, motorcycles, and cars, in addition to cash grants aimed at boosting economic independence.
Representing the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, used the occasion to reiterate the administration’s stance on people-focused governance. He charged political office holders to prioritize the welfare of the people, stressing that leadership is fundamentally about meeting the needs of constituents and justifying the trust reposed in them.
“I have always said that those of us whom God has blessed through the support of our people must spread the joy around. Service is about working to fulfill their needs,” the Governor stated through his representative, commending Hon. Bassey for what he described as a clear demonstration of responsive and impactful leadership.
He further urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the items and financial support received, emphasizing the importance of multiplying the resources for the benefit of their families and the wider society.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Udeme Otong, praised Hon. Bassey as a vibrant and effective legislator. He noted that the lawmaker has distinguished himself in lawmaking, oversight, and constituency representation, adding that the empowerment initiative reflects his deep commitment to the wellbeing of his people.
“What we have witnessed today is not only commendable but inspiring. It shows a representative who understands the needs of his constituents and is willing to act,” the Speaker said.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Robinson Uwak, lauded the initiative, highlighting the emotional connection between leadership and the people. He stressed that beyond policies, true leadership lies in the ability to uplift lives and restore hope.
Presenting his scorecard, Hon. Bassey expressed profound gratitude to God and the people of Okobo for the mandate to serve, reaffirming his commitment to delivering purposeful and result-driven representation. He explained that his governance approach is rooted in listening to the needs and aspirations of his constituents, which has guided his interventions and legislative priorities.
The lawmaker disclosed that he has sponsored and co-sponsored 19 bills and three motions, while actively carrying out oversight functions to promote accountability and improved service delivery. He added that several constituency projects and programmes have been attracted to the area under his watch.
According to him, his representation is anchored on a strategic framework of human empowerment, community development, and unity, all aligned with the ARISE Agenda of the state government led by Governor Umo Eno.
“This empowerment programme is not just about presenting a scorecard; it is about sharing the dividends of democracy and building sustainable livelihoods for our people,” he stated, assuring constituents that even greater achievements lie ahead.
Goodwill messages poured in from prominent stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor, Akon Eyakenyi; Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Ekong Sampson; and former Speaker of the State Assembly, Peter Linus, all of whom commended the initiative and urged sustained commitment to grassroots development.
Former Deputy Speaker, Felicia Bassey, expressed pride in the lawmaker’s achievements, offering prayers for wisdom and continued success while encouraging him to remain closely connected to the people.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, George Henshaw, described the programme as unique and impactful, noting that it reflects genuine dedication to improving lives at the grassroots.
