More Stakeholders Back Ekong Sampson’s Re-election Bid...Fault Some Stakeholders Position On Replacement Option
More prominent stakeholders in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District have declared their support for the re-election of Senator Ekong Sampson.
One of the stakeholders, Usoro Akpanusoh, a two-term former member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency, in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has opposed an earlier motion reportedly moved by Bassey Dan Abia Jnr. during an Eket Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting suggesting that the senatorial seat for the next election cycle be opened to aspirants from Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency.
Akpanusoh described the proposal as unpopular, insisting that it does not reflect the general sentiment of stakeholders across the district.
The former Vice Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government Area described Senator Ekong Sampson as a seasoned lawyer and experienced legislator who has demonstrated competence and leadership at the National Assembly. He noted that the senator has contributed meaningfully to the stability and effectiveness of the 10th Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio.
According to Akpanusoh, it would be in the best interest of Eket Senatorial District to encourage the senator to seek and secure a second term in office. While appreciating the rationale behind endorsing second-term bids for other leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Bassey Eno, Akpanusoh said it is unfair and wrong to leave the senatorial seat open.
Speaking further, he argued that even if the seat is eventually opened for contest, Senator Sampson should be given the right of first refusal in view of his performance and experience.
Akpanusoh therefore called on members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Eket Senatorial District to support Sampson’s second-term bid, expressing confidence that the lawmaker would perform even better if given another mandate.
He further noted that based on his observation of the senator’s representation so far, Sampson has demonstrated effective leadership that deserves continuity. He added that a second term would make him a ranking member of the Senate, positioning him to attract more development opportunities and democratic dividends to the district.
According to him, the future of Eket Senatorial District would be better secured under Sampson’s continued representation.
Also speaking, a former chairman of the Eket Senatorial District chapter of the APC, Dr Cyril Enemi, declared his total endorsement and support for Senator Sampson, describing him as a “square peg in a square hole.”
Dr Enemi said Ekong Sampson towers in Abasi Federal Constituency with the competence, intellect and technical capacity required to occupy the senatorial seat at the moment, warning that electing an inexperienced candidate could deprive the district of effective representation.
He assured that he would mobilise grassroots support across the district to ensure Sampson’s re-election, stressing that the senator’s intelligence, foresight and legislative contributions, as well as the advantage of becoming a ranking member if re-elected, informed his decision.
Both stakeholders reaffirmed their unwavering support for the lawmaker and pledged to rally more backing for his second-term bid.
This additional endorsement of Barr Sampson is coming on the heels of other endorsementa like those the Senator already enjoy from Chief Nduese Essien, Ekuwem, Akwa and many others
