Following the success of the first batch and a renewed drive to continue supporting brilliant but indigent students, the Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Hon. (Barr.) Ime Bassey Okon, has inaugurated the implementation committee for the second batch of his Educational Support and Bursary Award Scheme.

The inauguration took place Tuesday at the constituency office in Itu, where the lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to easing the financial burden faced by students pursuing higher education.

Represented by the Executive Chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Council, Obong Asuakak Umoh, the federal lawmaker said education remains a critical pathway for social advancement, noting that the educational grant initiative was designed to give students from less privileged backgrounds the opportunity to continue their studies.

He urged members of the committee to handle the assignment with transparency and fairness, stressing that the selection process must strictly follow the “first come, first served” principle.

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs, also commended the committee that handled the first batch of the programme for their diligence, which ensured the successful rollout of the initiative.

The maiden edition of the bursary scheme last year, which gulped over N16 million, benefitted more than 320 indigent students across Itu and Ibiono Ibom, many of whom were on the verge of abandoning their education due to financial difficulties.

Beyond the bursary support, the lawmaker also approved N200,000 each for 18 students from the constituency in the Nigerian Law School.

Student leaders from the area had earlier described the intervention as unprecedented, noting that such sustained educational support had not been witnessed in the constituency in over a decade.

Okon’s educational initiatives also include scholarships for children of deceased party stalwarts and other financial assistance programmes aimed at encouraging academic pursuit among youths.

The lawmaker said the interventions align with the education pillar of the ARISE Agenda of Governnor Umo Eno, which prioritises human capital development and youth empowerment.

Chairman of the implementation committee, Comrade Godwin Mbeke, who responded on behalf of members, thanked the lawmaker for the confidence reposed in them and assured that the committee would carry out its assignment diligently.

Other members of the committee include Moses Asuquo, Worldwide President of Itu Students; Gregory Akanimo, Worldwide President of Ibiono Ibom Students; the secretaries of Itu and Ibiono Ibom students’ bodies; Mr Imo Okon; Mrs Imekan Asanga; Mr Daramfon Okon, while Chief Basyl Oyama will serve as secretary.
