Menace Of Scavengers: AKHA To Strengthen Sanitation Laws

In it's avowed determination to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for Akwa Ibom citizens and dwellers, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has set in machinery to strengthen as well as enforce Environmental Laws.

Rising from a motion brought before it during Plenary today by the member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, the House emphasized safeguarding public health and enhancing environmental cleanliness as priority.

Rt. Hon. Bob noted with concern the harmful activities of refuse dump scavengers in Uyo Metropolis and its environs stating that their activities has resulted in the "scattering of waste, blockage of drainage systems, and exposure to hazardous substances and diseases".
The lawmaker who is the Deputy Leader of the House emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment for sustainable urban development and public welfare added that existing sanitation laws and regulations must be enforced to ensure proper waste management and urban order.
He called on the House to urge the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) to designate Waste Disposal Points, Identify and approve waste disposal 
sites in Uyo Metropolis and its environs, take up public enlightenment Campaigns where residents would be educated on proper waste disposal practices and designated dump sites while also enforcing Sanitation Laws.

Speaking in support of the Motion, the member representing Ibesikpo Asutan, Hon. Ubong Attah, Hon. Lawrence Udoide of Ini and the member representing Essien Udim, Hon. Prince Ukpong Akpabio decried the menace of scavengers and called for a review of the mode of operation to international best practices by the Agency.

The Speaker referred the Motion to the Committee on Environment to laise with relevant stakeholders and to report back to the House.

The House was adjourned to reconvene on the 4th February, 2025.
