The Chairman of the Senator Ekong Sampson Empowerment Committee, Otuekong Barr. Ini Ikott, has announced December 1 as the date for the disbursement of the ₦100 million students’ grant released by Senator Ekong Sampson, the senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, to eligible students. Otuekong Ini Ikott, a former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, made the disclosure yesterday after a meeting of the Empowerment Committee held at William Shakespeare Hall, Watbridge Hotels and Suites, Uyo.
Otuekong Ini Ikott also announced the release by Senator Sampson of another ₦100 million under the business grant and social welfare component of the empowerment programme, while not less than ₦250 million has been earmarked for the skills acquisition and training programme. He said this is in addition to a major free health programme that Senator Sampson is planning for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.
Barr. Ini Ikott added that construction work at the erosion site in Ekeya, Okobo, facilitated by Senator Sampson, will resume within the next few days. He commended Senator Sampson for procuring vehicles and other items to empower his constituents, adding that the senator had directed that some pioneer members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the senatorial district be accommodated in the empowerment programme because of their contributions to democracy in its early stages.
According to Barr. Ini Ikott, the students’ grants will be released to enable students to meet their urgent academic needs and to underscore the special attention which Senator Sampson accords education.
Senator Sampson routinely teaches in schools even as a serving Senator to motivate students and has several education-friendly projects spread across Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, including the construction of CBT/ICT centres, medical facilities, hostels, classrooms, teachers’ quarters and sporting facilities for students among others.
Otuekong Ini Ikott also commended Senator Sampson for facilitating employment for several youths of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in both the public and private sectors, describing it as lasting and sustainable empowerment.
Mr. Okwong Okwong, a postgraduate student and member of the committee, commended Senator Sampson for the transparency which, he said, will enable many students to benefit from the programme.
The release of the ₦100 million business grant is slated for December 14 and will be followed by the distribution of vehicles, minibuses, and other empowerment items. These huge interventions are coming under the Ekong Sampson Empowerment Programme (ESEP), which has been in existence since 2005, providing sustainable support to individuals and communities.
