Nigeria’s campaign for stronger female representation in governance gained renewed momentum on Tuesday as prominent women leaders, policymakers, and advocates converged in Abuja for the official unveiling of the “Empower Her Project,” a new initiative championing women’s political and economic inclusion.
The event, held at the National Women Development Center, drew a distinguished audience, reflecting the growing national commitment to advancing women’s voices in public leadership. The Special Guest of Honour, Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima, wife of the Vice President, was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Media & ICT (Office of the Vice President), Hon. Kwapchi Bata Hamman.
Among other notable attendees were former Kaduna First Lady Mrs. Amina Elizabeth Yakowa; President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun; former Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen; Senator Binta Garba; and Federal Housing Authority Executive Director (Finance), Dr. Mathias Byuan.
Chairing the ceremony, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, Managing Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), delivered a powerful keynote, stressing the urgent need to expand women’s participation in governance and national development. She described the Empower Her Project as a strategic platform designed to equip women with the skills, education, and opportunities required to lead effectively.
“Empowering women strengthens families, communities, and ultimately the nation,” she asserted, noting that sustainable development is impossible without women at decision-making tables. She urged stakeholders to treat women’s empowerment as a shared responsibility. “Together, let us empower her, and by doing so, empower our nation,” she concluded.
A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Northern Christian Women for Asiwaju, alongside presentations from guest speakers who emphasized the need for gender-balanced leadership across all levels of governance.
With its launch, the Empower Her Project is being hailed as a significant step toward closing Nigeria’s gender gap in political participation, signaling stronger national resolve to elevate women into leadership roles.
