Gully Erosion In Eman Uruan Worries AKHA, Seek Govt Urgent Attention

 




The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has moved to intervene in the ravaging menace caused by gully erosion affecting the people of Eman Uruan and it's environs.


Rising from a motion brought before the House by the the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. Itorobong Etim tasked the House to cause government to step in to provide immediate intervention to ameliorate the plight of the area.


She noted that there was urgent need to intervene in the devastating gully erosion as the ravines was endangering the people adding that one at obot idim ukana is relentlessly eroding the football field of St. Catherine's Primary School Eman and the pupils are in serious danger even as the only source of drinking water(Idim Nkara) can no longer be accessed due to this menace.

 

The Lawmaker informed the House that "the foundation of the only transformer which supplies light to the entire village is very close to the gully erosion site located in the middle of the village. With the incessant rainfall and persistent erosion, the foundation is at the verge of collapsing".



Hon. Etim added that the culvert by the transformer that was built about two decades ago has been swept into the gully thereby dividing the only major road in the community into two with a very deep ravine close to people's houses including the compound of the Village Head.

She called on the Speaker to mandate  relevant House Committees you undertake on the spot assessment while also mandating Akwa Ibom State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to urgently determine ways to salvage the disastrous predicament plaguing the people of Eman Uruan.


The Speaker, Elder Udeme Otong refered the matter to the Committee on Works and that of Environment for indepth study and report back in two weeks

Improved Working Conditions For Teachers In Rural Areas Underway As AKHA Advocates Provision Of Live-In Quarters

Secondary school teachers posted to rural areas in the State would have a sigh of relief as lawmakers of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has advocated to the State Government for the provision of live-in quarters to reduce the burden of transportation and solve issues of accomodation.  This was sequel to a report presented to the House by the Chairman House Committee on Education, Hon. Kenim Onofiok during Plenary today. Hon. Onofiok informed the House that the Committee had invited stakeholders from the Ministry including Commissioner for Education, Chairmen, State Secondary Education Board, Permanent Secretaries to discuss on the matter. The House thereafter dissolved into the Committee of the Whole where the two recommendations of the report were adopted.
