Gully Erosion Threat To School Worries AKHA...Seek Govt Immediate Intervention




The threat posed by a ravaging gully erosion menace at Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, Etim Ekpo LGA formed part of deliberations of Lawmakers of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during Plenary yesterday.


The motion which was brought to the House pursuant to Order III Rule I of the Standing Order by the member representing Etim Ekpo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung noted the urgent need to salvage the Erosion menace at the school and it's environs.



Rt. Hon. Idung stated that the gully erosion which is an alarming environmental challenge is "progressively threatening the safety, infrastructure and over all well-being of Indigenes, Staff and Students of the aforementioned Institution. Due to incessant rainfall in the past few months, the situation has worsened and become worrisome, leading to potential hazards for both Staff and Students, as well as compromising the integrity of the School infrastructure".


The Lawmaker further added that the devastating effects of the gully erosion in the school environment has become manifestly deteriorating, and if not addressed promptly, the consequences could be catastrophic.


"Worried that the gully erosion is relentlessly eroding access road to the School Premises, posing unnecessary threat and damages to adjourning structures and properties around the Institution, as well as the School Premises, endangering Classroom Buildings, Administrative Offices and other essential facilities in and around the School Compound".




Further worried that the gullies pose significant. safety risks to Staff and Students, especially during heavy rainfall or adverse weather conditions, making it hazardous to navigate the School Compound.


He noted that the situation if left unaddressed, will adversely affect the School's age long reputation, thereby hindering enrollment of new Students. More so, defeating and jeopardizing the overall good intention of Government policy on Free and Compulsory Education.


The Lawmaker called on the Speaker to direct relevant Committees to as a matter of urgency inspect the said areas and report back to the House for legislative actions while also calling on the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno to order immediate inspection of Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, NASCO, by relevant agencies for on- the - spot- assessment and inspection to determine appropriate measures to be taken to salvage the precarious situation.


The Speaker in his submission while decrying the situation refered the matter to the House Committee on Works for indepth study and report back to the House in two weeks.


The House was adjourned to 8th August.
