Following the mandate from the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for an on the spot visit to Essien Udim to furnish it with details towards the resettlement of airstrike victims of Ntak Ikot Akpan, the Committee on Boundary were in the area today Tuesday for an oversight.
The Committee headed by the member representing Uruefong Oruko, Hon Precious Selong while being received by the council Chairman, Mr. Anthony Like noted that they were in the area to access the level of damage and make recommendations to the State Government
Hon. Selong added that the visit to Ntak Ikot Akpan was in the spirit of "blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God." She extended gratitude to Governor Pastor Umo Eno for prioritizing security in his ARISE agenda and also acknowledged the Chairman of Essien Udim for ensuring a peaceful visit by securing the team.
The Committee was warmly welcomed by Mr. Anthony Luke, Chairman of Essien Udim, at the Council Secretariat, Afaha Ikot Ebak. His commendation reflected the essence of "blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy," as he appreciated the Committee's compassionate response to the situation.
During their visit, the Committee met with the Clan Head of Ukana West, His Highness Okuku Sylvanus Ekanem, and the Clan Head of Ntak Ikot Akpan, Obong John Eshiet. The visit was prompted by a motion from Hon. Barr. Prince Ukpong Akpabio II, advocated for the resettlement of the victims, in alignment with the teachings of "peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness."
In February 2021, Nigerian Air Force carried out a strike on Ntak Ikot Akpan due to the influx of criminals into the State through the community. This unfortunate incident resulted in loss of life, injuries, and destruction. The Committee's presence mirrored the spirit of "blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted," as they sought to alleviate the suffering.
The oversight function was attended by esteemed Members including Hon. Dr. Nsidibe Akata, Hon. Jerry Otu, Hon. Dr. Itoro Etim, Hon. Prince Ukpong Akpabio, Hon. Mfon Idung, Hon. Emem Udom, and Hon. Uduak Ekpo Ufot. Additional attendees were Commissioner for Power, Mr. Camilius Umoh, Deputy Clerk, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Dr. Chris Inwang, Parliamentary Staff, and others committed to the cause of peace.
