Worried by the State of abandonment faced by Model Secondary School Issiet Ekim in Uruan Local Government Area, the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon Itorobong Etim has called on the State Government to initiate a comprehensive evaluation to assess the current state of the school with a view to actuating it.
Coming under a Motion on Notice presented on the floor of the House of Assembly, Hon. Etim informed the Speaker and Members that the school which was built between 2003-2007 and has remained inoperable since 2007.
The Lawmaker noted that the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno in line with the goals of the ARISE Agenda has finalized arrangements to establish Model Primary Schools equipped with state-of-the-arts facilities in every federal constituency with the remodeling of Christ the King Primary School Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo as a first step.
"Worried that 16 years down the line, work has not resumed at the site, neither has the facility been put to use, and the facility is slowly deteriorating in all ramification as would be seen in pictorial evidence..."
"Also worried that children from Issiet Ekim community have to travel across villages to attend schools and some properties in the school has been lost to vandals".
She added the school which which was cited by Obong Victor Attah and named after Obong Nyong Essien, the first representative of old Calabar province in the Legislative Council in Lagos and the first Nsom of Uruan was in dire need of government attention therefore seeking the leave of the House to mandate the Committee on Education to as a matter of urgency embark on an on the spot assessment of the Nyong Essien Model School, Issiet Ekim in Uruan Local Government Area while also urging the state government to direct and furnish relevant organizations with resources to resume work at the site.
Members who spoke in support of the motion included Member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika, member representing Okobo, member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno expressed dismay at the poor projet management and called on government to step in and arrest the situation.
The Speaker called on the Committee on Education to invite the Commissioner for Education to interface and report back to the House
