Urue Offong/Oruko Erosion Menace: AKHA Wades In

 


Worried by environmental d graduation cause by erosion in communities in Urue Offong/Oruko, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has stepped in with a call to the government of Akwa Ibom State to give immediate solutions.

Rising from a motion sponsored by the member representing Urue Offong/Oruko State Constituency, Hon. Precious Selong noted with serious concern that her constituents in Urue Offong, Umume, Ibotong Eweme, Eyoabiasang Villages of Urue Offong/ Oruko Local Government Area and the neighbouring Eyo-Udombo and Eyoefai villages, Enwang in Mbo Local Government Area were facing devastating issues from erosion.

She informed the House that in company of the Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson, they has inspected Eyo-Udombo and Eyoefai Enwang which are neighbouring villages from my Local Government Area.


Hon. Selong noted that erosion has aggravated the unfortunate situation, thereby increasing the deplorable condition of these villages and negatively impacting on socio-economic activities in these communities thus causing avoidable losses of lives, property and businesses.


She expressed worry that several buildings in the affected villages have been submerged and risk imminent collapse as a result of the present state of erosion and flooding witnessed now that there is heavy downpour.

"Convinced that there is a need to protect lives and property of our constituents and also ensure a careful look into every environmental concern around us to save our environment".

The Lawmaker who heads the Boundary Committee of the House prayed the House to urge the State Ministry of Environment and other related agencies to carry out inspection to these affected villages with a view to make necessary recommendations for government intervention while also mandating the House Committee on Environment to ensure compliance.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Udeme Otong in his submission refered the matter to the Committee on Works and Environment to liase with relevant agencies in a bid to ameriolate the plight of the area.

The House has been adjourned to 17th August.
