The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, has expressed readiness to partner with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to promote academic excellence and enhance the welfare of students in the state.
Rt. Hon. Otong made the commitment on Tuesday when he received the leadership of NANS during a courtesy visit to the Assembly Complex, Uyo.
Welcoming the student leaders drawn from tertiary institutions across Akwa Ibom State, the Speaker commended their dedication to education and their proactive engagement with government institutions. He assured them of the legislature’s continuous support in advancing policies that strengthen education and youth development.
Otong also lauded Governor Umo Eno’s consistent investment in education, noting that all student-focused bills passed by the Assembly had received the governor’s assent. He urged the students to remain focused on their studies and shun distractions that could hinder their academic progress.
In his remarks, the Deputy House Leader, Hon. Nsidibe Akata, highlighted the recent passage of the bill upgrading the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to a University of Education, describing it as a demonstration of the Assembly’s commitment to educational advancement.
Similarly, the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. Itorobong Etim, commended NANS for recognising the role of women in leadership and for ensuring gender inclusivity in its executive structure.
Earlier, the NANS delegation led by Comrade Patience Nyeneime appreciated the Speaker’s consistent support for the student community and proposed a partnership with the Assembly to host a Legislative Mentorship Summit aimed at educating students on policy-making and governance.
The students also presented a commendation award to the Speaker, lauding his efforts in championing education-related legislation and serving as a role model for young people.
The courtesy visit was attended by key members of the House, including the House Leader, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob; Deputy Leader, Hon. Nsidibe Akata; Chief Whip, Sir Effiong Johnson; and other ranking lawmakers.
