The South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to provide sustainable electricity to all rural communities across the South-South region.
The initiative, according to the SSDC Managing Director, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, aims to bridge the region’s energy gap and drive economic transformation through clean and renewable energy solutions.
Ms. Akpabio disclosed this on Tuesday during a strategic meeting with the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, in Abuja.
She said the partnership would focus on electrifying rural and riverine communities, powering agricultural and processing clusters, and providing renewable energy for schools, healthcare facilities, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The plan also includes youth empowerment through training and employment in the clean energy sector.
“We are committed to ensuring that no community in the South-South is left behind in the energy transition,” Ms. Akpabio stated. “This collaboration with REA will accelerate access to electricity and stimulate economic activities across the region.”
In his remarks, Engr. Aliyu praised the SSDC’s vision and pledged the REA’s full support for the initiative. He highlighted several ongoing and completed electrification projects by the agency in the South-South, including solar hybrid mini-grids, electrification of schools and health centres, and market electrification projects.
He added that the partnership with SSDC would build on these successes and deepen the impact of government-led rural energy interventions.
Both agencies agreed to establish a joint working group to fast-track the implementation of the rural energy plan and monitor progress across the region.
