President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has charged the newly inaugurated leadership of the South South Development Commission (SSDC) to embark on impactful projects that will transform the living standards of the people and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Akpabio gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja when the board and management of the Commission paid him a courtesy visit. He reminded the team that the establishment of the SSDC comes with enormous responsibilities to drive economic growth across the six states of the South South region.
“The ball is now in your court to add value to the South South region through this development commission. This is not a bonanza; it is a call to service and to put on your thinking caps to contribute to the nation’s economy and the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Akpabio said in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong.
The Senate President commended President Tinubu for establishing the SSDC, describing it as a well-deserved gesture for a region that has significantly sustained the nation’s economy.
He also praised the National Assembly for passing the SSDC bill despite initial reservations due to the existence of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), noting that the new Commission’s mandate extends beyond oil-producing areas to every part of the region.
“We will continue to support you to fully take off and execute big projects. You can count on me, my office, and my colleagues for adequate funding to ensure your success,” Akpabio assured.
Chairman of the SSDC Board, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Senate President, and lawmakers for their role in establishing the Commission. He pledged that the board would deliver on its core mandate and ensure the people of the region feel the impact of good governance.
“Under my leadership, we will avoid the mistakes of the past, work closely with stakeholders, and ensure accountability and results,” Nwuche stated.
Also speaking, the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Usoro Akpabio, promised that the interventionist agency would pursue a comprehensive regional economic agenda, prioritizing human capital development and infrastructure renewal.
She assured that the Commission would collaborate with state governments and other development partners to unlock the vast potential of the South South region.
“We intend to be a model for other development agencies in Nigeria by delivering sustainable results that bring out the best in our people,” she added.
