The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has urged the state government to establish a State Central Revenue Account (SCRA) to unify all revenue collections and curb financial leakages across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The resolution followed a motion moved on the floor of the House by the Leader, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Otobong Bob, during plenary on Monday, brought under Order 3(1) of the Standing Orders of the Assembly.
In presenting the motion, Hon. Bob said the adoption of a State Central Revenue Account was crucial to strengthen fiscal transparency and improve cash management in line with global best practices.
He recalled that the Federal Government introduced the Treasury Single Account (TSA) in 2012 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, a policy later expanded under President Muhammadu Buhari to consolidate all federal revenues.
According to the House Leader, states such as Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Oyo and Niger have since domesticated the initiative through digital payment platforms that enable citizens to make payments for government services, levies and taxes electronically.
Hon. Bob expressed concern that Akwa Ibom could continue to lose substantial revenue if it fails to adopt a unified and technology-driven collection system. He therefore urged the government to establish a centralised digital platform integrating all MDAs and local government councils for real-time revenue collection.
The House also called on the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science and Digital Economy, the Accountant General’s Office, and the Akwa Ibom Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS) to commence the process of setting up the SCRA before the 2026 fiscal year.
Lawmakers further recommended collaboration with reputable fintech firms to deploy secure and inclusive multi-channel payment options, as well as a statewide sensitisation campaign to promote digital compliance.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker, Elder Udeme Otong, commended the motion and directed the Clerk to communicate the resolution of the House to the Executive for immediate action.
If implemented, the SCRA is expected to enhance accountability, transparency and efficiency in the management of public funds in Akwa Ibom State.
