Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to SSDC: Partner States, Avoid Project Duplication

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has urged the management of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) to work closely with state governments in the region to ensure coordinated development and prevent duplication of projects.

Abbas made the call when he received the SSDC delegation led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

Commending the Commission’s leadership for its unity of purpose, the Speaker emphasized that collaboration and alignment with state development plans would be critical to achieving meaningful and lasting impact.

“The Commission must work closely with state governments to avoid duplication of roles. Collaboration and coordination will be key to achieving real impact,” Abbas stated.

He also charged the SSDC to uphold prudence, accountability, and integrity in its operations, describing them as the “pillars upon which enduring institutions are built.”

“The foundation you lay today will determine the future of the Commission. Learn from the experiences of others, build strong partnerships, and ensure your programmes deliver tangible dividends to the people through impactful projects,” the Speaker advised.

In her remarks, Ms. Usoro Akpabio expressed gratitude to the Speaker for his warm reception and consistent support for the South-South region, describing him as a “regionally friendly, youth-focused, and gender-sensitive leader.”

She noted that the visit was aimed at expressing appreciation for Abbas’s role in supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which led to the establishment of the SSDC, and to brief him on the Commission’s readiness to begin full-scale operations across the six South-South states.

Akpabio highlighted the SSDC’s core mandate, including economic transformation through human capital development, healthcare, education, social services, youth and women empowerment, infrastructure renewal, environmental sustainability, and regional peacebuilding.

She assured the Speaker of the Commission’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and prudent resource management while seeking continued legislative support.

“The SSDC stands as a testament to the visionary legislative leadership of the National Assembly under your guidance and that of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio,” she said. “Your steadfast support for regional commissions shows a deep commitment to balanced development and equitable opportunities for all regions.”

The visit follows a similar engagement with the Senate President, where the SSDC leadership expressed appreciation for his role in facilitating the Commission’s creation.

The courtesy call to the Speaker reaffirms the Commission’s resolve to build strong partnerships with both chambers of the National Assembly and key stakeholders toward a prosperous and inclusive South-South region.
