2019 Polls: A'Ibom Police Arrests Thugs, Arsonists, Recovers PVCs



PRESS BRIEFING BY THE POLICE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, AKWA IBOM STATE POLICE COMMAND, DSP ODIKO MacDON, HELD ON THE 18TH OF FEBRUARY, 2019 AT THE STATE HEADQUARTERS, IKOT AKPAN ABIA, UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE. 

Ladies and gentlemen of the press,
 Good Morning.
I welcome you to today’s press briefing on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State.

On assumption of duty as Commissioner of Police Akwa Ibom State barely one week ago, the Commissioner of Police, CP BASHIR MAKAMA psc(+) promised the good people of Akwa Ibom State that he will consolidate on the successes recorded so far in achieving a peaceful state. He also warned hoodlums to drop their trade or leave the state as there will be no hiding place for criminals in the state especially during the 2019 general elections. The events of the past few days has necessitated this briefing in order to inform the good people of Akwa Ibom State of the true state of affairs. 

On the 3rd  of February, 2019, Personnel of Nigerian  Navy intercepted one Stephen Gad ‘m’ in Eastern Obolo in possession of one locally made double barrel pistol, 145 PVCs and 27 Temporary voters cards. The Command has carried out a discreet investigation and the suspect will be charged to court.

On 10th February, 2019, the Command acting on a credible information, arrested one Ekemini Sunday Etuk a.k.a “Biggi” attacked No. 25 Effiat Street, Uyo who specializes in sending fake bank alerts and dud cheques to his victims. Suspect duped one Chimezie Samuel of N937.000.00, and one Chukwudi Okorie of N400, 000.00.     

On 12/02/2019 at about 09:21pm, one Anthony Ikechukwu, a Pharmacist was shot dead at St. Michael Primary School, Abak road, Uyo and his Lexus Jeep, ash colour with registration number AKD 850 EC was taken away. The Commissioner of Police immediately deployed SARS personnel who traced the four man gang to Aba in Abia State the next day where a gun battle ensued and two of the hoodlums were gunned down, while two others escaped with bullet wounds and the Lexus Jeep and a locally revolver pistol with four (4) live cartridges were recovered back to the state.

Also, on 13/02/2019, some hoodlums set ablaze INEC office at Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. But the Policemen on guard duty intervened timely and chased the hoodlums away and put off the fire. All INEC materials are intact.

Furthermore, on 15/02/2019, the eve of the 2019 general elections, at about 10:05pm, hoodlums at Obot Akara Local Government Area, close to INEC office, machete
 and killed one person whose identity is unknown, burnt eleven (11) buses and vandalized two others. The Command acted swiftly and arrested ten (10) persons in connection with the said crime. They are:

Emaeyak Bassey Essiet ‘m’
Daniel Peter Umoh ‘m’
Ekemini Udoudo Jacob ‘m’
Idongesit John Etuk ‘m’
Iniobong Boniface Akpan ‘m’
Ifiok Emmanuel Etukudo ‘m’
Etuk Etteh Gregory ‘m’
Udo Ayanyang Akaninyene ‘m’ and 
Wisdom Ujdo Etteh ‘m’.  the following exhibits were recovered:
Two locally made short guns
Twenty-five (25) live cartridges,
Weeds suspected to be Indian hemp
Two machetes
Charms of different types
One knives 
One Scissor
Hot drink
Phones
Dead bird
Human hair and 
Two axes. They will all be transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

On 15th February, 2019, the Command arrested a total of forty-one (41) persons at Angellyne Guest House, No. 1 Godwin George Umoh Street, Opposite Dove International School, Osongama, Uyo who came from Bayelsa, Delta and Ondo States. The said persons claimed to be in the State as observers for the 2019 general elections, but could not give any proper or reasonable identification of themselves and had no INEC identification either. More investigation is ongoing to determine their true identities and their purpose in the State. 

On 15th February, 2019 a total of 20 persons were arrested at Ukanafun who were brought from Rivers State by Uduak Ezekiel Dick ‘m’ of Ikot Akpan Nkuk, who lured into the State on the pretext of attending a burial of one Lance Corporal Udo Essien of the Nigerian Army, but ended up wanting to use them as thugs. 

Also, On 17th February, 2019 the Command arrested one Anietie Peter in Mkpat Enin in possession of 34 Voters card. He couldn't give any cogent reason for being in possession of such number of PVCs.

On 17th February, 2018 the Command arrested one Ayaya Edem Ekpayu Bassey  a.k.a “Eteka” ’m’ and Asuquo Monday Ebio ‘m’ in Ikot Ekpene who confessed to be political thugs hired from Ukwa village in Odukpani LGA of Cross River State by a Politician for the purpose of thuggery. 
They will all be charged to court at after investigation. 

Let me use this opportunity on behalf of the CP to call on all politicians to play the game base on the rules and advice their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the elections.

I also want to assure you that the non partisan nature of the Police in Akwa Ibom State will not change. We will remain apolitical, neutral and committed to free, fair and credible elections. We will at all times act professionally based on International best practices.

Let me thank the good people of Akwa Ibom State who have availed us with useful information which has led to our successes in the past one week. I urge you to continue to partner with us and sister security agencies to make the state retain its peaceful status.

 For those who are contemplating fermenting violence during the forthcoming re-scheduled 2019 General Elections, take notice, there will be no hiding place, as we will arrest and prosecute all those who will violate the Electoral Act or perpetrate any form of criminality in the State.

AKHA Moves To Save Ibom Air From Collapse, Approves N30B Bond

  By Asuquo Edem  The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution for Ibom Air to access neccesary funds for operation to remain in business. The resolution came from a letter from the State Governor Pastor Umo Eno to the Speaker with details GHU/ AKS/S/104/S.4/ Vol.1/5 titled "Re: Resolution of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the Provision of Irrevocable Standing Order (ISPO) for up to N30,000,000,000.00 (Thirty Billion Naira) Bond Issuance Under the N200,000,000,000.00 (Two Hundred Billion Naira) Bond Issuance Programme by IAL Financing SPV PLC (Sponsored by Ibom Airlines Limited)." In his contributions to the letter of request, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Kufreabasi Edidem while decrying the travails of businesses with high interest rates from commercial banks noted that the approach of the governor for the airline showed clear ingenuity and encouraged his colleagues to support the cause to purchase the bond from the market.  He stated that it would
