UYO – The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has come out swinging against media reports suggesting it is probing immediate past governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, describing the claims as “baseless, speculative, and mischievous.”
In a strongly worded statement issued yesterday, August 12, and signed by Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Kufre-Abasi Edidem, the Assembly said at no time was any committee constituted to investigate the former governor, contrary to a report published in the Leadership Newspaper and echoed by other media outlets.
“The publication is speculative, lacks a factual basis, and does not reflect any official position or resolution of the House,” Edidem declared.
The Deputy Speaker clarified that the only recent committee activity was tied to complaints from workers of the state-owned St. Gabriel’s Coconut Oil Factory in Mkpat Enin, who alleged they had gone seven months without pay. He said the committee’s mandate was to address the wage issue — not to question the ownership of the enterprise or dig into Emmanuel’s tenure.
Far from investigating Emmanuel, the statement lauded his “creditable performance” in office, pointing to his industrial drive and the success of Ibom Air, described as the best airline in the country.
“The House would not descend to disparaging leaders and past governors,” Edidem stressed. “Any attempt to portray us as probing Mr. Udom Emmanuel is misleading and mischievous.”
In an apparent swipe at Leadership Newspaper, the Assembly called for “responsible journalism,” urging reporters to verify facts from legislative sources before going to press. It warned that sensational and inaccurate reporting “undermines the credibility of democratic institutions” and misleads the public.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and public interest, the House said it would continue to oversee state-owned enterprises without “bias, prejudice, or political colouration,” advising the public to disregard the “false and malicious” report in its entirety.
“This House is the conscience of society and the voice of our people,” the statement concluded.
