The Senate has confirmed Ms. Usoro Akpabio as the Managing Director of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), a move expected to strengthen development efforts in Nigeria’s South-South region.
The confirmation was made on Thursday during plenary, presided over by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau. It followed the presentation and adoption of the Senate Committee report on the SSDC, presented by Senator Benson Konbowei (PDP – Bayelsa Central), who chairs the Committee on the South-South Development Commission.
In addition to Akpabio’s appointment, the Senate also confirmed Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as Chairman of the Commission.
Lawmakers praised both appointees for their leadership records and commitment to national development, expressing confidence that the new board would deliver on its mandate.
The SSDC, established by the National Assembly, is charged with driving infrastructure, economic growth, and social development in the oil-rich South-South states.
