Nsibiet John Emerges as New NUJ Chairman in Akwa Ibom




Comrade Nsibiet John, publisher of The Ink Newspaper, has been elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council.

Representing the Federated Chapel, John secured a decisive victory at the union’s Triennial Delegates Conference held Friday at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. He polled 555 votes to defeat his closest rival, Comrade Nene Afia of the State Ministry of Information Chapel, who garnered 92 votes. Other contestants, Effiong Edet and Esther Effiong, received 21 and 4 votes respectively.

The election, supervised by South-South Zonal officials of the NUJ, also saw Comrade Margaret Moore re-elected as Vice Chairman for a second term. Moore, of the State Ministry of Information Chapel, earned 393 votes, defeating Mkpoikana Eno (246 votes) and Ernest Udo (34 votes).

Comrade Nsikak Esenowo, also from the Ministry of Information Chapel, emerged as Secretary with 419 votes, ahead of Michael Ufot who polled 253 votes.

Other elected officials, who were returned unopposed, include:

  • Comrade Udeme Hosea – Treasurer
  • Comrade Kufre Emmanuel – Financial Secretary
  • Comrade Uduak Akai – Assistant Secretary
  • Comrade Dianime Uko – Auditor

The newly elected executive takes over from the Amos Etuk-led administration and will serve a three-year term steering the affairs of the union.
